Roosebeck DMCRT5 Mountain Dulcimer 5-String with Cutaway Upper Bout and F-Holes 2010s – Natural

Roosebeck DMCRT5 Mountain Dulcimer 5-String with Cutaway Upper Bout and F-Holes 2010s – Natural

• Strings: 2-Melody, 2-Middle & 1-Bass • Narrow Upper Bout Allows Guitar-Style Fingering • Vaulted Fret Board For More Reactive Sound • Spruce Soundboard, Cream Colored, Straight Grained • Scroll Carved Peg Head with 4:1 Tuners • Sophisticated F-Shaped Sound HolesThe Cutaway Dulcimer plays the same and sounds the same as a traditional mountain dulcimer. One side, however, is narrower which allows the dulcimer to be played in a “guitar position” in addition to the normal “lap position”. Thus the fingering is inverted from normal style. It is kind of a missing link between the traditional mountain dulcimer and our “stick style” Wildwood Dulcimer. The inverted fingerings are a little easier for guitar players but it still produces the rich, full sound of a mountain dulcimer. When you want to play in a traditional style, lay it flat and play it like any other mountain dulcimer. The solid spruce soundboard features three F-holes. The back, sides, and fret board, are sheesham. The fret board has arches underneath allowing free space between the soundboard and the fret board. The carved scroll peg head features gold colored, geared 4:1 banjo style tuners. Many tunings will work, but we recommend the traditional DAD to make it easy to pick up and play. A pick and noter are included. Traditionally, mountain dulcimers had three, equally spaced, strings: a melody string, a middle string, and a bass string. Later developments created a 4-string dulcimer by changing the string spacing and doubling the melody string. Doubling the melody string created greater volume to the melody line. Contemporary dulcimers, such as ours, include extra notches on the nut to allow more personalized string patterns. The inside doubled melody string can be removed completely to revert to the traditional 3-string set-up. Or the Inside melody string and the middle string can both be moved over one notch to create an equal spacing between all four strings. Find the set-up that works best for you.Owner’s GuideSPECIAL NOTE ON STRINGS: There is no warranty on strings. Manufacturers recommend that you change the strings every 3-4 months. It is always a good idea to keep an extra set of stings to replace any that may break. You should always wipe down your strings with a clean dry cloth after use. If you store your instrument, you should consider changing the strings when you pick it up again. The 6 1/2 and 13 1/2 Frets: This model includes the 6 1/2 and 13 1/2 frets. Most early dulcimers had a strictly diatonic scale; that is, the frets were placed so as to produce a major scale (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do) with no extra half steps. More recently, dulcimer players have found that the placement of an extra fret between the 6th and 7th frets and between the 13th and 14th frets allows two things; (1) a major scale can be produced starting at another point (on the open string), and (2) most songs containing “accidental” notes can be played. The 6 1/2 and 13 1/2 frets add versatility. The disadvantage is that it takes a while to get used to the extra frets if you have been playing a dulcimer without it.Item Weight: 2.6 lbs. Limberjacks

Handmade Limberjack Appalachian Folk Dancer/Rhythm Instrument

Handmade Limberjack Appalachian Folk Dancer/Rhythm Instrument – Natural

These are handmade, by me, in Mt Airy, North Carolina (Mayberry), from choice hardwoods. Lots of attention getting fun and a great rhythm instrument as well. The LimberJack dances on a flat dance board by sitting on one end of the board and tapping the board to the rhythm of the music. Hold the dancer in the other hand by the dancing stick. Now lower the man until his feet just begin to touch the end of the vibrating board and hang on. He’ll dance you a jig or reel or line dance or get down right funky! Go to youtube and keyword ‘limberjacks’ for some demonstrations. Tremoloas

International Musical Corp. Hawaiian Tremoloa

International Musical Corp. Hawaiian Tremoloa – 1930s – Natural

Here’s one of the most distinctive approaches to playing melody on a chord zither. It appeared in response to the rapid increase in popularity of Hawaiian music in the 1920’s. The instruction manual is bold enough to say that it “might well be called the Original Hawaiian Instrument,” though the Hawaiian steel guitar had already been played for decades. Even the patent plainly states that the instrument “simulates closely the tonal effects of the so-called Hawaiian steel guitar.” There’s a single melody string which is under fairly low tension. A sliding (or rolling) weight rests on the string and is positioned by the player to locations marked on the large note label under the string. That position controls the pitch of the string when plucked. The relatively heavy weight actually bounces on the string and alternately raises and lowers its tension a little. Thus the pitch is raised and lowered a little around the desired pitch, and the sound becomes a broad vibrato. In addition, as the weight moves from one played note to the next, the weight stays in contact with the string, and creates a glissando that is reminiscent of the sound of a Hawaiian steel guitar. The patent for the Tremoloa was granted in 1932 to Harold Finney, a principal in the International Musical Corp. at the time, and John H. Large, an inventor who also received a patent on a form of the Ukelin. The Tremoloa patent was applied for in 1929 and shows Form 1 of the instrument. We could assume that the Tremoloa wasn’t available before about 1929. $299 **tax and fees added in final price below domestic shipping available add additional $50

Balalaikas

SOLD OUT!
Roosebeck BLLP Balalaika Prima

Roosebeck BLLP Balalaika Prima – Natural – 2010s

Balalaika Prima has the traditional 3 strings and measures approximately 27 inches in length. The scale length is 430 mm. The body has the classical triangular shape. The back is slightly bowed and made with alternating staves with two tones of sheesham and lacewood. The darker back contrasts with the light colored wood of the soundboard. Includes a nylon gig bag and pick. The Balalaika strings are tuned above middle C to: A, E, E (1st-3rd). The 1st string is the thinnest, and lays over more frets than the 2nd and 3rd strings. Use a piano or electronic tuner as a reference for tuning. The tension on each tuning peg can be adjusted by tightening or loosing the screw on the top of the peg. To play, the left hand notes the strings while the index finger of the right hand strums high on the soundboard near the neck. The dark sheesham on the soundboard is decorative but also protects the soundboard from the strumming. The Balalaika most likely evolved from the Oriental dombra, which is still played in present-day Kazakhstan. Knowledge of the dombra most likely spread to Russia by Mongol trade and conquest. After undergoing structural changes, the Balalaika was embraced by Russians. It is said that the Balalaika embodies the Russian people’s character, with its ability to switch from happiness to sadness with ease. It was common for the peasant ballads, composed for the Balalaika, to irreverently poke fun at the authority of the times. For this reason there were times when the Balalaika was banned by both the Orthodox Church and the State. The instrument enjoyed its greatest folk popularity in the early 18th century. In the later 19th century the instrument underwent a number of changes, including the adoption of the classic triangular shape. Reportedly, in the late 19th century, Vassily Vassilievich Andreyev, was responsible for the transition from a folk instrument to a concert instrument. Andreyev’s chamber ensemble, renamed The Great Russian Imperial Balalaika Orchestra, introduced the instrument to cultures outside of Russia. The Instrument was also carried by the common people when they fled Russia at times of war. Brand New $420 **tax and fees added in final price below domestic shipping available add additional $45

Roosebeck Bouzouki Sheesham Stave Body

Roosebeck Bouzouki Sheesham Stave Body – Natural

Roosebeck’s four course, eight string, Greek Bouzouki is a beautiful instrument with a rich history. The fingering is the same as the higher four strings on a guitar, and the same as the fingering on a ukulele. The tuning, however, is different, the recommended being Cc Ff aa dd. The Roosebeck Bouzouki has a European spruce soundboard, sheesham fingerboard, and mahogany neck. The soundboard, fingerboard, and headstock have beautifully designed custom lacewood inlays. The scale length is 26.25″ (667mm). There is a truss rod in neck. Includes a padded gig bag. The Bouzouki dates back to Byzantine times, and in Greece, was known as a pandura. It later became known as a tambouras, and around the 19th century evolved into the modern day bouzouki. In the 1960’s, the Irish Bouzouki became popular in traditional Celtic music. The Irish Bouzouki looks a little more like a mandolin, and it is tuned differently than this traditional Greek counterpart. Owner’s Guide SPECIAL NOTE ON STRINGS: There is no warranty on strings. Euphones

Bali Steel Euphone (Glass Harp) – 8 Note – D Minor

Bali Steel Euphone (Glass Harp) -8 Note – D Minor – Aluminum/Glass

Please read this important info and check out the video about playing the instrument: Like any other instrument, a little practice is needed to get a good sound going. The key to playing the euphone is clean hands. The sound comes from the metal bars and rubbing the glass makes the bar vibrate. Your fingers against the glass act almost like the bow of a violin. Make sure to wash any oils from your fingers and clean the glass rods as well. I find that distilled water works very well for playing. Also pure spring water. Certain types of water do not work well. For instance in my house I have a system that treats my water with salt. For some reason it’s hard to produce a good sound with this water. See video: Once you hands are washed you can start. First wet your fingers and the glass rods. A good technique to start with is to pinch the glass with three fingers. It will take some practice to get the right pressure. Once you can get the bar to sing you can try just playing with your fingers on the top of the glass. This is the goal because then you can easily play more than one note at once and you can work on getting an even sustained tone, by alternating your left and right hands. I find playing the euphone is similar to playing singing bowls. A little practice is needed to get a nice consistent tone going. The rubbing of the glass can also produce a squeaking sound. With practice and the right pressure you will not make this sound. Just the tone coming from the metal bar. The individual notes are removable from the stand. So if anything ever needs to be replaced or repaired, you could just swap out the one note, rather than having the whole instrument serviced. The plexiglass is very durable so this shouldn’t be an issue. Brand New $1,699 **tax and fees added in final price below domestic shipping available add additional $60

Mid-East HLRE 8-String Lyre Harp

Mid-East HLRE 8-String Lyre Harp

The solid sheesham body lends itself to the soft gentle curves of this eight string lyre. The eight metal strings provide a classical sound that is enhanced by the lacewood soundboard. When you are not playing, you can hang it up as a piece of art; it’s that pretty. Tuning tool is included. Hold it upright on your lap or as you walk, and pluck both sides of the strings. Or lay it flat and pluck it. 10 inches wide by 17 inches long, 2.75 inches deep. There are a few suggestions for tuning. An authentic tuning derived from Judaic worship music, where the instrument was used to accompany the singing of the Chazzan, also known as a Cantor. This style of tuning uses the Chazzanut mode. Starting with the bass (largest strings) tune as follows: E F G# A B C D E (Ahava Raba mode) In the early Middle Ages in Eastern Europe, the secularization of the Jewish worship music gave rise to Klezmer music. Jewish troubadours, known as klezmorim gave the music a place in weddings and other simkhes (joyful events). The Klezmer music eventually blended with Slavonic, Greek, Turkish, Gypsy and even American jazz tempos and rhythms. For Klezmer music try the Misheberakh mode which is: E F# G A# B C# D E Two alternative tunings that work well with singers comfortable sing in the Key of G are (again bass to treble): E F# G A B C D E (Natural minor) and D E F# G A B C D (E is tonic). Notice, in the second tuning, all the notes are the same but you’re starting on D rather than E. Includes tuning tool. Owner’s Guide SPECIAL NOTE ON STRINGS: There is no warranty on strings. Manufacturers recommend that you change the strings every 3-4 months. It is always a good idea to keep an extra set of stings to replace any that may break. Roosebeck Minstrel Harp 29-String Chelby Levers Sheesham Knotwork

Roosebeck Minstrel Harp 29-String Chelby Levers Sheesham Knotwork

Roosebeck Minstrel Harp 29-String Chelby Levers Sheesham Knotwork 29 strings – 4 octaves – Perfect for beginner to intermediate students • Note range of C3 to C7 – Color coded strings for easy play • Full set of levers – Easily change keys • Handcrafted frame of solid wood – ply soundboard for exceptional sound and strength • Tuning tool and extra string set included Roosebeck with attractive Celtic Knotwork design hand carved in side panels. Featuring the smooth, sleek look of the Chelby levers is reflected in their functionality. Compared to the standard Roosebeck harp levers, the Chelby levers are mechanically superior. Each string has it’s own lever. The design allows the lever to engage the string from the side and limit the possibility of strings lifting off the bridge pin. Professional harpists appreciate the red and blue colored caps, which make it easy to locate the C- and F-string levers. The lever is attached to its base by a hex bolt. A synthetic washer is spaced between the lever and base, creating a smooth and controlled, lifting action that resists slipping once engaged. The base of each lever is mounted to the harp arm by two screws, should any adjustment be necessary. The bridge pins for the Chelby levers have also been improved; they can be adjusted, in or out, by simple turning with a hex wrench. 29 DuPont hard nylon strings, a range from C3 to C7, 24 sharpening levers, engraved and inlaid sheesham frame and a high quality ply soundboard for exceptional sound and strength. Approximately 38″ high. Includes a tuning tool and extra string set. Owner’s GuideSPECIAL NOTE ON STRINGS: There is no warranty on strings. West African Reed Raft Zither (Bwaba Thianhou/Tchahoun)

Unknown West African Reed Raft Zither (Bwaba Thianhou/Tchahoun) – Natural

The tchahoun/thianhou of Burkina Faso’s Bwaba people is a reed raft zither that occurs widely in sub-Saharan Africa under a variety of names, including balambale (Jola people, Senegal’s Casamance region), yomkwo (Nigeria’s Birom people), kuma (San people, Namibia), toba (Mahi people, Benin), and bangwe (Sena people, Malawi). Our offering’s dimensions: 13 1/2″ l. x 13″ w. x 1/2″ h. Crafted by Ishmael Sanou and sourced by Linda Domoh Mwinsonge, it consists of 22 millet stalks, which are lashed together in the shape of a raft, thus the “raft” in the name. The playing strings are made by cutting thin slits in the stalks, lifting them, and suspending them over two bridges near the top and bottom of the frame. The strings then are bound at each end to secure them. Finally, so that the strings will create various pitches, their middles are wrapped with plant fiber — more binding for those strings with lowest the pitches and less binding for those with the highest pitches. The pitch of the strings can be changed by sliding the ends of either of the bridges upward or downward on the frame. To play, hold the instrument in both hands, horizontally in front of the body, and pluck the strings with the thumbs. In some models, a small, ringed plaque is attached to the underside of the instrument; this plaque rattles sympathetically when the strings are plucked, adding a percussive accompaniment.
